What This Study Series Means to Me
A wall overlaid with a few dozen sheets of crafted paper. Every few days or so, a new stroke of paint or pastel is added and shapes begin to take form. Some of the pictures are more clear than others. Some of them could almost be mistaken for duplicates. And that’s because I’m drawing the same image over and over, making the slightest adjustments each time. It’s good old fashioned practice. I have images in my mind, inspired by the people that I see. Sometimes, I recreate these images on paper and they become anonymous portraits.
A few months ago, I had a vision of seeing these sketchbook portraits come to life on a much larger scale. Larger scale in the sense of a six foot canvas original or something like that. But I wasn’t quite sure how I was going to take these small sketches and turn them into a masterpiece of that proportion. The jump seemed a bit daunting. This study series has become a crucial “in between” step. Taking my practice of human portraiture and turning it into large scale mixed media pieces, worthy of your wall space.
